It All Started with a Pink Donut
Birthday Party with a Purpose March 2007

I was eight years old in December 2006, when I saw the pink donuts at Dunkin’ Donuts and told my Mom, “hey, Dunkin’ Donuts should use these pink donuts to raise money for breast cancer!”

I thought “what about me?”  Then I found out I had two Aunts who were breast cancer survivors!

So I decided to have a birthday party with a purpose and asked my friends and family to make donations to Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure instead of giving me presents.  Their generosity was amazing and together we raised over $2,500!

The Komen Race for the Cure people asked me to speak at their annual grant awards lunch. It was the first time I ever gave a speech was a little nervous in front of 200 people, but I had something to talk about because by then my friends & family’s generosity pushed the total to over $5,000. And we were just getting started!

By October and the Race for the Cure, Team Lexi raised over $9,000!  I was asked to speak in front of almost 16,000 people at the walk!  OMG!  But once I got up on the stage it wasn’t so bad.  Especially since the people from South Florida Dunkin'Donuts surprised me after my speech and gave me free donuts for a year (which my brothers really appreciated). More importantly, they began to donate part of their pink donut sales in October and even had a big display at next year's walk!  So help me encourage them to do that for the 2009 Race For The Cure!  In fact, I’m working toward getting them to do that nationwide so please help by sending them a note or link to this site!

Peace for the Cure 2009

I had too much fun with Art for the Cure to completely abandon it so for my 11th birthday I came up with Peace for the Cure and my birthday party was so fun.  Once again I asked my friends to paint their own pictures using peace signs and the pink ribbon.  We made over $3,000 selling the posters at the Race from our Love Lexi Tent!!!

The coolest thing that happened for the 2009 event was meeing the incredible Ferdie Pacheco. I found out that long before (and well after) he became famous as Muhammad Ali's "fight doctor," he made so many important contributions as an artist, author and historian.  Luisita & Ferdie Pacheco opened their home, hearts and studio to me. The first thing Ferdie asked me when we looked at the blank canvas he gave me was “what do you see?” Of course, it was a peace symbol! We painted together for hours, and the final product is the kickoff art for the 2009 Peace For The Cure campaign.

You & Me Today!

I have learned a lot since my trip to Dunkin’ Donuts in December 2006.

I have learned you never know where inspiration will come from and how a simple pink donut can make you think about doing something great. And most important, I have learned that even a little 9...10...11 and now 12 year old can save a life.

Four birthdays ago, if you had asked me what it would be like to have a birthday and no presents, I would have said that I couldn’t even imagine it. I like opening a gift-wrapped box like any 12 year old - just ask my friends! And yet for four years I have received the most extraordinary presents - donations, letters, support and meeting new people who inspire me. After all, if these women have the courage to face down cancer, the least I can do is my part to help.

So welcome to my website!  Please click to donate to the Love Lexi Fund and even if it’s just a little bit - every little bit counts big time! bTogether we will do great things!!!!

Art for the Cure 2008

I still wanted to do more for my 10th birthday than have a party and receive presents.  So I asked the South Florida Art Center on Lincoln Road to help me host an Art for the Cure birthday party. Everyone from my class painted their own interpretation of the breast cancer symbol and with the help of my family and friends, we brought the total to $10,000 on the day of my 10th birthday!!!

I wanted to share how art can help find a cure. So I put all the pictures together and designed a poster! We raised even more money selling the posters!  And since Mail America was kind enough to print them for free – all the money goes to finding a cure! Plus the people at Carhartt clothing even sent me hats with breast cancer symbols to help me get more donations. Wow!  That was so nice!

One of my favorite artists, Romero Britto, heard about my efforts and invited me to paint with him in his studio! And even though his favorite color is yellow and mine is obviously pink, he told me he also believed art could heal and was so encouraging! He let me help him create a one-of-a-kind pink ribbon artwork and gave it to me to help raise even more money.

Once again my Team Love Lexi members woke up early for the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure event in Miami. Once again I was honored to speak to the thousands of courageous survivors and their supporters about Art For The Cure. This time I invited my friends to join me on stage to experience the impact our artwork and effort can have and to show them how special it is to be part of something important.

We auctioned the Romero Britto artwork for $10,000 and winning bidder Miami-Dade Commissioner Sally Heyman, who is a breast cancer survivor, immediately gave it to the Susan G. Komen Miami office. After selling the Art for the Cure posters and Carhartt hats, Team Love Lexi has raised a total of nearly $24,000!
